Project 1 Artist Statement:

For my old languages, I selected Steven Hawking’s A Brief History of Time. Because the terminology in the book has a strong relation to my current feelings towards life. For the first passage I selected, it describes the urgent, pressing and pressuring feeling I have. For the second passage I selected, it describes my termination to overcome. For the third passage I selected, it describes the magnificent, peaceful and bright future I am looking forward to.

Project 2 Artist Statement:

The narrative for my project is I chose a place that allows me to hear what I usually can’t hear, so I decided to go take a walk at the bottom of the Rocky Mountains. The title for the video is called ‘Echo’. I chose a very saturated color scheme to reflect the peace, calm feeling that I had when I was on site. I only used my iphone and video editing tool Davinci resolve 17 to create the video. There are 2 movies that influenced my thinking: Blade Runner 2049 and The Gladiator.

Project 3 Artist Statement:

The title for my GIF is called Ship of Light. For this project, I chose my apartment room to be my intimate place. Because I have been living here since my junior year at CU. This room slowly became the shelter of my body, and my feelings. When I am angry, the “ship” takes me to a quiet and dark place. When I am hopeful, the “ship” takes me to a lightful place. I want to take this chance to reflect on what my room has seen about me. The color scheme is black and white, in order to emphasize the lights. Photoshop is the main tool for me to complete this project, because it allows me to play with the lights, pictures and effects more freely.

Project 4 Artist Statement:

The Story is about the development of Chinese characters. The title is called ‘the birth of a horse’. I chose dark, old colors that reflect the ancient quality of a culture. For my fonts, characters are designed in a “cave-style” way to reflect the origination and I use a lot of layering to create stop motions. I use Illustrator to create my fonts, photoshop to create stop motions and color, transition effects. My main inspiration comes from Chinese Calligraphy and painting. I choose to use simple but effective sounds so it won’t overwhelm the context, “light, magical” wind sound for transition and Drum sound for overall atmosphere.

Project 5 Artist Statement:

The Story is about a mom and her son’s journey. The title is called ‘A place for us’. I chose brown, dark colors that reflect the loneliness of the environment. I try to use squish and squash, exaggerated movement, layered motions to create a smooth and cute animation. I also created secondary movements for anticipation. Slow in and slow out between each scene. I used photoshop to create the scene environments, and I drew the characters in Illustrator. For my sound, I only wanted to focus on the story telling, how each scene relates to each other.
